One of the things that's been coming up lately for me is the idea of immersion. Of balancing dedication with play and experimentation.
This is one of the reasons that I've been loving the new podcast, Chaos and Cunning, so very much. It's allowing me to be more experimental in what information from my practice I share. I turned to more modern forms of magic after suffering from pretty severe magical burnout, and it's been healing in some ways to move into new areas. But I've also missed some of the je ne sais quoi that came from my time being totally immersed in Nordic magic.
As the year has turned over, I've been contemplating ways to bring that feeling of immersion back into my practice but to maintain the lightness that comes with being more experimental. I've also gotten absolutely obsessed with runes again as I'm pulling together course modules for the Queering the Runes course. But I also love to play around with runes in ways that are unexpected.
What does that look like?
I want to prioritize working magic and including the runes. And because it's now January, it feels particularly potent for me to create a bit of a magical resolution.
So here goes: For one year, I will incorporate runes into every spell that I do.
By their nature as simple symbols runes are very easy to incorporate into other spellwork.
Making a sigil? Add a rune to the mix. Casting a circle? Add some runes for protection/energy. Making a folk remedy? Chant a rune over the remedy.
I want this to be casual, a fun approach to working with the runes in a new way. So far it has felt very natural - whisper a rune under my breath when going on a walk to do some augery, trace a rune in the air when I'm making something herbal, think of and even sing some runes at the beginning of a ritual. Because I'm working with them so intensively right now as I design the course modules, and so they're on the mind in many new ways.
I'm not sure how much I will be sharing of this journey - my spellwork is often rather private. But I do like to share methods. When I feel comfortable sharing things over there, I will keep my paid members updated. If I write ritual guides and spells for the patreon you will DEFINITELY see my new and changing relationship with the runes at work.
I plan on writing regular updates about how the experiment is going, even if I can't share more personal details. I have a feeling that a lot of fascinating stuff is going to come through.
If this sounds like something you're interested in hearing more about, join the Patreon! I also have a tier called Community Supported Magic, where I offer petitions on behalf of patrons and offer up some spells/ritual guides. That's at $15/month because of the energy exchange. But membership at any level will get you access to these notes about the runes.
See you next time!
